Volcán Barú

Volcán Barú is a dormant stratovolcano and is the highest point in Panama. At 3,475m (11,400ft) it towers over its surroundings. On a clear day hikers are treated to the spectacular view of two oceans from the top; the pacific and the atlantic. The 14.5km long trail follows the rocky 4x4 track up 6000ft to the summit.

Those truly brave of heart and in superb physical condition may want to try hiking up the western flank of the volcano. This trail meanders through bamboo stands and lush rainforest and is less frequented than the trail on the eastern side. The trail starts outside of the town of Volcán and steeply rises to 11,398ft in only 8km. This is a steep, hard trail. If this is your choice be ready for an intense workout.

It is possible to camp in the crater of the volcano. This gives weary feet and knees a chance to recover before the long hike down.

Make sure to wear good hiking boots. Bring warm layers including a good coat, temperatures at the top can near freezing at night and in the morning. A rain poncho is also a good idea especially if hiking during the rainy season.
