What an amazing Hike!
We recently guided a group of 6 up the East side of Volcán Barú. This is the more popular side even though it is the longer route. The trail has a much mellower grade than the west side trail, with its short steep sections followed by long stretches of relatively flat trail.
This particular tour was a night hike so we started at 10pm. We were blessed with the most perfect weather we could have asked for; beautiful full moon shining bright enough that we almost didn't need the headlamps that we all brought. The night was nice and cool, perfect for a night of exerting yourself, though by the end of the trek we had all put on our jackets. The section of the trail that has been lovingly dubbed "the fridge" was cold enough that you could see your breath in the air.
We made it to "los fogones" just after sunrise and everyone was glad to pass out on the hard wood of the fogones floor for an hour or so. Afterwards lunch was eaten after which the group straggled up the last half kilometer to the very top.
Everyone was so pleased to make it to the highest point, marked by the large cross! Every
one hung out, taking pictures, relaxing, and just being pleased to have made it to the top. Right as we were about to start our hike down we witnessed a heartwarming surprise; A man on the trip proposed to his long time girlfriend, right there underneath the cross, at the highest point in the country, with the whole of the country below them.
We wish them both the best in the adventure they are about the embark on.
